I thank my parents for making sure I was at 123 Wessen St. Pontiac, MI every Sunday at 9:30am. Not only that, but I thank them for living what I was learning. Because of that, and because of them, even my unholiest moments, I'm still covered. I'm rooted and grounded. Looking at society and today's future, I HAVE to represent that solid rock. Too much sinking sand.

On most days, my mind moves faster than I can process. I feel like John Nash. I haven't been perfect by any means, but I feel like God and I have grown closer than we've every been. Fact of the matter is, we may have been this close before, but before he had his training wheels on me. Now that I am riding my bike, I can look over and see that he's riding right next to me. It feels great.

I don't know much about what I am doing, but I thank God for the calm spirit that I have. I am okay. I am happy. I love life. Each day is truly a blessing and I realize that as I see each day.

When I was online (don't suspend me!) I had no problem learning information (Einstein Que), especially poems. My ADP would always say "you might know the poem, but wait till you go through something and the poem takes meaning - you'll never forget it." 7 years later, he's absolutely right. Roo. But the prayers that I have been saying since I was a kid have so much meaning now. It is truly amazing. I am past the point of repetitive information, and each night and morning beside my bed, in front of a meal, before an interview, before and after travel, and so on is a chance to grow, reflect, praise, ask for council, and just talk. Failure to do so results in a serious disconnect.

Love is a beautiful thing. There are certain times in the day when I just have to stop and marvel at the love in my life. Right now is one of them. I love my wife. I love my family. I love my friends. Heck, I even love the Bruhs, sometimes, lol. I love being back in school. I love life. Life is complex, difficult, and just isn't fair; however, so many of our daily problems can be solved by love. Yeah, love ain't gonna fix the BP oil crisis, but love is strong. Love is all that it says it is in Corinthians. Love is real. I am proud to say that I love everything that loves me back, and more. The best part about it is, when nothing else can help, love lifted me, just like the song. God is love, and so am I.

So many of us were faced with loss this year. Too many underage funerals, too many close personal tragedies. It’s time for a breakthrough.

So many of us lost jobs (and healthcare), houses, and credit scores. Too many foreclosures, too many résumés submitted. It’s time for a breakthrough.

So many of us lost our drive, our motivation, and our diets. Too many calories, too many forgotten memberships. It’s time for a breakthrough.

So many of us lost our faith, our hope, and our reason for being. Too many doubts, too many down days. It’s time for a breakthrough.

But we’ve gained new views on life, and on love, and we are better people because of those who’ve already made it to Glory. Our breakthrough is coming, and we will be strong enough to receive it.

But we’ve gained a new appreciation for free time, developed an entrepreneurial mind, remembered what it means to persevere, and we are slowly becoming the living testimonies that we used to see growing up. Our breakthrough is coming, and couldn’t have come at a better time.

But we’ve rediscovered the beauty of friendship. We’ve buried beefs and built bridges to lift one another up, as we climb to higher heights. Our breakthrough is coming, and our friends will be there – with running shoes on.

But we’ve once again realized that God is on our side, and his will is perfect. He has us in mind, and he won’t ever fail us. Our breakthrough is coming, and he’s gonna hand deliver them to those that are ready.

As for resolutions – let’s make proclamations. I’ve already claimed some great things for 2010…Here are just a few: Advance my career, finish my first year of grad school, prepare my family for our lives together, successfully lead the #gymteam in not only dropping a couple sizes, but feeling better and staying away from the Black Folk Diseases, and of course walking faster and stronger with the pacesetter.

So let’s thank God for our turbulent 2009: From our Barack sized Victories, to our Tiger sized Defeats. Regardless, we made it all the way to here, the last day in 2009. Never has a year gone by so fast, but so slow. We’ve learned how to aim big, celebrate on the run, and make things happen…twice. We’ve also reunited with defeat, neglect, and fear. But 2010 will be the year. 2010 will be the year that we have been waiting for. 2010 will be the year that we have been praying for. 2010 is the year of our dreams. 2010 is the year of the breakthrough. My breakthrough is already set. I am just waiting patiently to receive it, and move mountains with it. I’ll see you and your breakthrough in 2010. Chris Preston.

You might have heard of this one...but if not, here goes...

Mind Your P's and Q's

When somebody tells you to "Mind Your P's and Q's," they probably got it from one to two places. One place was the old schools printing presses, where the letters were opposite of what they would be on the page. The letters P and Q were easily and often confused, so to mind your P's and Q's meant to pay close attention to the minor details.

But for you folks that love the spirited beverages, such as myself, this one may be more interesting. Back in the day in the old English taverns, the bartender was completely responsible for watching how much his customers drank (had to cut folks off way back then, lol). By using a slate or a talley sheet behind the bar, the bartender would mark P for Pint and Q for Quarts so that he could monitor their intake, and also see how much money he was making. Having that, when patrons got out of hand, the bartender would yell "MIND YOUR P's and Q's" in order to restore peace to the establishment.

I tried to support it, folks. I really did. I, along with the rest of the HBCU community, had so much hope for the BCFX video game. After hearing of its move from PC to Xbox 360, I knew I had to get it. I then read about the special features, the exclusive band battle, the drumline challenge, and the use of the HBCU teams. Along with many others - I. Was. Hooked.

The fact of the matter is, for about 6 years, EA sports would go back and forth with adding teams from the MEAC and SWAC on their NCAA Football series. My best friend, who went to Columbia University would pick his alma matter, and I would pick mine for an Ivy League/MEAC battle. After all, on those games, if you weren't a AP poll Top 25 school, your team had terrible - better yet, almost unplayable ratings. So it was a fair fight. Then, as the gameplay and graphics progressed, they had to make room somewhere - why not cut these HBCU schools. So there went our friendly underrated battle.

But then the creator of BCFX teamed up with Grambling State Alum and Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams, I knew there was a chance to play with our teams with good ratings and fair gameplay. I tried to look up some game ratings, but most of the ratings were complaining about the name "Black College Football Xperience," "why is there not a game called White College Football?" - But we'll save that for another blog. After finding no concrete ratings, and having some extra Gamestop trade-in credit, I said "why not," i'll go check it out.

To keep a long blog short.......the game sucks. The band competetion is somewhat fun, and the drumline battle is pretty cool, too. But even the graphics, accuracy, and Sound output are spotty at best. It will definitely make you think your surround sound speakers need repair. As for the graphics....imagine playing NCAA Football 2001 (for PS1).....except playing on Sega Genesis. Yup, that bad. It truly does not look like a professional final copy ready to sell. Very blocky, no fluid motion, graphic skips and glitches, and the sound is again horrible. From the custom urban dances in the endzone, to Doug Williams poor grammar in the "Ask Doug" playcall list, I was so disgusted with the game, the HBCU fact section was not even entertaining.

And on top of that..... NORTH CAROLINA A&T STATE UNIVERSITY is NOT on the game!! There are roughly 100 HBCU's, and their selection of 1/3 of them was sketchy at best. No disrespect, it was probably a money issue for some schools, but the list is skipping out on some of the more known schools.

Having said that, the creators of this game should have teamed up with the Guitar Hero or Rock Band group and made "HBCU Band Hero." Now, that would have been a quality investment. BCFX is going back to Gamestop today...Guitar Hero 5 has a pretty good set list =D

No room for Fair Weather...

When you say you are a Detroit Sports Fan, you better mean it. Our teams make you prove your allegiance to them. For many years, there has always been at least one team that made you growl at their name and temporarily wish they would move to Indiana, and at least one team that made you invest your heart in their success...most times leading to an emotional crash.

Nothing has really changed with that situation, but because our auto industry is in the tank, the people of the city and surrounding areas are desperately looking for something to enjoy, celebrate, and believe in. If you read my boy Pastor Marcus's blog, then he'll tell you what we should be believing in regardless; but I will just stick to the sports aspect.

We've had a season of letdowns...well a few seasons. The Pistons started making big moves with hopes of one last big run before restructuring began...but that flopped. The Tigers made huge moves to stack the lineup to destroy the competition...but they did just the opposite. The University of Michigan Wolverines had a HORRIBLE year! The Lions did their best to make the impossible...possible. 0-16. The Lions made Detroit feel like they were 0-16. But at least the Shock won, and the Wings won.

For many years, we've been used to the clearcut answers about our teams. "Yeah they are winners" or "they are some bums." These days Detroit sports are taking their fans on rollercoaster rides, and with everything going on in our lives, we don't need it. We've already shown our love, we have invested EVERYTHING that we've got, but how much stress can Detroit optimists take? As a true fan, it sucks to lose faith in your team, but with the Pistons fading away, the Lions giving us 1 win, and hope for a season of close games for 3 quarters, the Wings losing in game 7, the Shock fading in the playoffs, and the Tigers giving away the AL Central...what's left?

Not living in Michigan anymore, I have to break my neck to follow my teams. ESPN gamecasts, mobile updates, and www.channelsurfing.net help keep me going. I love being one of a few Detroit fans in a conversation, or at a restaurant/bar. I just think, "if I'm cheering like this, I know its crazy at Hockeytown." I watch ESPN religiously like most men, and will continue, but ESPN is just a cool version of Fox News (we'll save that discussion for another blog) ....and the way they do Detroit sports is no different than the way Glenn Beck does Barack Obama.

I know things won't change overnight, and probably not for a while. I guess the whole purpose of this blog is to vent on behalf of true Detroit Sports Fans. I salute the George Blaha's, Mitch Alboms, and Ernie Harwells, because they always have our backs, no matter what. We just want our teams to invest in themselves and their fans, as much or more as we have invested in them...Until then, the fans and I will continue to treat each Lion win like the Superbowl, each Piston win like a championship, and each Wing victory like another cup. Let's go Michigan. Let's beat ohio state!!

T his week's article (and title) was
inspired by an old story I saw
in an American publication long
time ago. Last week, while cleaning up my
closet (as they say!), I encountered some
of my old notes I have taken during an
early work of Total Quality Management I
have done with one of my clients.(I would
not reveal the name to protect the innocent!)
Any road, the client said they would
buy into the concept, if they see success
stories of that same formula I was suggesting.
Even though that was an easy job,
I decided to take the opposite approach:
the "what if" approach.
What if we had less than perfect out put:
product or service? What if we get as close
as perfect, but not exactly that? And, what
if we give our customers less than 100%
of quality, accuracy and consistency?
Here are some examples of my "what if
questions" provided from the American
industry figures of production if it was
done at 99.9%:
* 22,000 checks will be deducted from
the wrong bank accounts every 60 minutes!
* 1,314 phone calls will be misplaced
by telecommunication services every
minute!
* 12 babies will be given to the wrong
parents each day!!
* 2,488,200 books will be shipped in the
next 12 months with the wrong cover!
* 5, 517, 200 cases of soft drink produced
in the next 12 months will be flatter
than a bad tire!
* 18, 322 pieces of mail will be mishandled
in the next hour!
* 880,000 credit cards in circulation
will turn out to have incorrect card holder
information on their magnetic stripe!
* 114, 500 mismatched pairs of shoes
will be shipped this year!
* $ 761, 900 will be spent in the next 12
months on tapes and CD's that won't play!
* 315 entries in Webster's third new
international dictionary of the English language
will turn out to be misspelled!
Incidentally, 99.9% accuracy would be
a remarkable improvement in the context
of observed performance level. For example:
* A Hewlett-Packard study of 300, 000
semiconductors from three American
firms and three Japanese firms found the
average failure rate of the American chips
was over 0.1 %, while the failure rate for
Japanese made chips was zero!
* The US airline industry, despite reams
of advertising about improved performance,

Mind you, these are old figures, can you

Bottom line note: business today can
not deliver less than 100% quality products
and services. You customers will not
tolerate any deviation. You are in the business
of undifferentiated products, so if you
can not match your high customers expectations,
somebody else will.

This was clearly a mess, but honestly there was a lot wrong with this show. Madonna's soliloquy was too long, and too personal. I got it, but at the same time I definitely didn't get it. As far as the Michael Jackson tribute, it was very live (minus dude that couldn't do the lean), and WAY better than BET's tribute awards. But Jermaine and Joe Jackson...Slick hair, slick talkers.

I absolutely love Jack Black (pause) and every dumb thing he does, and I was rollin with the outfit, but the prayer to Satan? Really? Absolutely confusing. Absolutely not awesome.

I dug Lady GaGa's crazy outfits, they were entertaining, but did she thank GOD and GAYS?! No judgment on the subject matter, but random controversial ignorance is not live. C'mon man.

WHY is RUSSELL BRAND doing this awards again?! Just as terrible, just as senseless, just as ready to turn the channel, but after Kanye happened, I went crazy hard on Twitter and Facebook...

As for Kanye...seriously, that was so dumb. Beyonce ended up winning the "highest" award of the evening, and also the one she wanted...after doing a good performance. Whatever point he was trying to make...I missed it. He is acting out violently like a child or teenager. Ever since he lost his mom, he's been on some bull. Today just took it too far. He keeps going off like this and acting invincible, somebody will surely let him know that he is not...and the worst part about it, there will be very few people to talk about his success without mentioning this foolishness first.

Beyonce, you are like the San Antonio Spurs. I sure don't like 'em, but they find a way to win. Way to get the points with the the Taylor credit.

All in all, i'm upset I watched the whole thing, but lets not end on a bad note...LMAO!!

Unemployment: First 100 Days

Well, I hadn't planned on going this long without a job... I hadn't planned on not having a job. Times have been rough. A lot of changes have had to happen, and there are more to come. I've had good days, and bad days, and many days in the middle. It's rough ground, and there are far too many people walking with me. I've been on vacation so long, I've forgotten how to work. I'm so ready to work, that I'll take anything (even though anything wouldn't take me), and I almost tried to. Now that some of the bigger pictures aren't that big anymore, it's really time to get grinding. It won't be long now, things will happen very very soon.

Today, My fiancee and I missed an opportunity. An opportunity that started off Golden, and slowly faded. And when opportunity turned into to just a hope, then we prayed and prayed and prayed.....and hoped that God would answer our prayers the way that we wanted them answered. So, naturally, we were disappointed.

Disappointed, but it helped us realize our blessings. And just hours after disappointment, we have taken advantage of new opportunities that will arise from this event, and these blessings are sure to follow. I've got a good mind to believe that these blessings will follow quickly.

I thank God for the wisdom to see my blessing out of my disappointment, and a new definition of my life from this opportunity.

Doggone it. C'mon, Plaxico. Another one bites the dust. And watch everyone scream and moan about how unfair it is. And they are just destroying the black athlete. But there comes a certain point where we need to be held accountable for their actions. So what should have been 3.5 years for being a complete and utter dummy, turns out being just 2. Somebody might argue about Stallworth only getting 30 days for killing a man. But he got looked out. Sometimes that stuff happens, yay legal system. But to be upset or say the system is messed up because his plea deal wasn't reached using the four-and-a-half finger discount is asinine. I think that with all the crazy stuff that happens afterwards, the message is missed.

The moral of the story: Don't do stupid stuff, especially if you're famous, double-especially if you're black. It never works out in your favor. Yup.

What is the issue. This is like the 37th time he's come back. Why do they let him keep coming back. Why did they let Jordan come back all those times too. I think that is an insult. I understand Legends not wanting to give it up, but to play with people and teams emotions like that, its pretty ridiculous.

To sign him for not one, but TWO seasons at $12M and $13M is out of control. The Vikings must really be desperate to win the NFC North. The division that they won last year with two QB's and Adrian Peterson. It's not like they are a forreal contender.

$25M on a 60% at best arm for two years on a guy who will throw just as many Interceptions as TD's will place them probably 1 game ahead of the Lions for 3rd in the division.

I wasn't feeling the questions, I think they need to let him live. There is so much work done in fluffing these situations, its hard to get through to the real person, but I think this was a good piece, and you could feel some sincerity within his answers. Can you believe that the jersey sales are already poppin off?! Thats how it happens. Long time coming. Personally, I think the Lions should have taken him and let him split time with the overpaid rookie. Ahh, well. I still can't believe that people are as upset as they are. This man just did two years in prison for killing some dogs. A lot of people kill dogs. I don't even like dogs, but after all that, you'd think he would get a break. That's that foolishness.
